Event Details

On the 550th anniversary (February 19, 1473) of the birth of the father of modern astronomy, Nicolaus Copernicus, the Canadian Polish Congress Alberta Society, the Polish Canadian Association of Calgary, and the Polish Combatants’ Association in Canada, Branch #18 present a group of twelve banners describing the life, work, and legacy of this famous Polish scientist,

From the time humans first appeared on Earth, they observed the Sun and other celestial bodies moving in the heavens above them. Successive generations were convinced that the Earth did not move.

It was Copernicus, the Polish astronomer and mathematician who, based on his calculations, formulated the visionary theory that it was our planet that was in motion around the Sun and not the reverse.

This was the origin of the modern dictum” “Copernicus stopped the Sun and moved the Earth.” Copernicus’ heliocentric theory of the Solar System is comparable to the discoveries of Aristotle, Newton, and Einstein.
